October is Non-GMO Month

In October we will be celebrating Non-GMO Month.  Here is a little bit of information about GMO's from the Non-GMO Project's website, www.nongmoproject.org.  More information about Non-GMO Month to come!

  • GMO's or genetically modified organisms are created through gene-splicing techniques or biotechnology.
  • Gene-splicing allows DNA from one species to be injected into another species.
  • GMO's are combination of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional cross breeding methods.
  • In 30 other countries including Australia, Japan and all the European Union countries significant restrictions and complete bans have been put on GMO's.
  • In the U.S the FDA approved commercial production of GMO's based on studies conducted by the companies creating GMO's and who will profit from their sale.
  • A 2008 CBS news poll found that 87% of consumers want GMO's labeled.
  • The Non-GMO Projects' seal for verified products will give the public an opportunity to make an informed choice when it comes to GMO's.
  • A study conducted be the USDA in 2007 found that 91% of soy, 87% of cotton and 73% of corn come from GMO's.
  • GMO's are present in more than 80% of packaged products in the average U.S or Canadian grocery store.
