October is Non-GMO Month
In October we will be celebrating Non-GMO Month. Here is a little bit of information about GMO's from the Non-GMO Project's website, www.nongmoproject.org. More information about Non-GMO Month to come!
GMO's or genetically modified organisms are created through gene-splicing techniques or biotechnology.
Gene-splicing allows DNA from one species to be injected into another species.
GMO's are combination of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional cross breeding methods.
In 30 other countries including Australia, Japan and all the European Union countries significant restrictions and complete bans have been put on GMO's.
In the U.S the FDA approved commercial production of GMO's based on studies conducted by the companies creating GMO's and who will profit from their sale.
A 2008 CBS news poll found that 87% of consumers want GMO's labeled.
The Non-GMO Projects' seal for verified products will give the public an opportunity to make an informed choice when it comes to GMO's.
A study conducted be the USDA in 2007 found that 91% of soy, 87% of cotton and 73% of corn come from GMO's.
GMO's are present in more than 80% of packaged products in the average U.S or Canadian grocery store.
